Fils à Maman, the new French trend in Hong Kong!
Fils a Maman, which literally translates as “Mommy’s Sons” is an authentic French restaurant on Hollywood Road. Four childhood friends decided to recreate the old traditional French food they experience from their mothers when they were little. They now have several restaurants around the world. Between Central and Sheung wan, following little stairs, you will emerge in a peaceful scenery where you can hide from the business of Hong Kong. Little gardens in front of buildings will enchant you and give the European atmosphere that matches perfectly with the delicious food that is served.
The restaurant is decorated with finesse and has an attention to details such as the little menu which have random pages like a map of France, or explanations about the Neperian Logarithm creating an entire experience. Many choices will vary daily which is why you are given a little black board with the dailies (very French style). Set lunches are available starting at 130HKD for 2 set courses or 175HKD for 3.
We opted for 3 set courses with Raw and Smoked Salmon Rillettes for starters. Very tasty, they will open your appetite for what comes next. HK.salad went classic for the main course and opted for Boeuf Bourguignon with Fries. The meat was extremely tender and the red wine sauce was fantastic. On the side, a fair amount of homemade French fries completed the meal perfectly. This is where two categories of people will emerge. Either you are still able to continue eating or you should go for the 2 set course lunch as the plates are copious. For dessert, we went for a chocolate cake with a blackberry coulis. More of a slice of Christmas cake shaped as a log than an actual cake, it still is the perfect finishing touch.
The service is a bit slow but explained by the quality of the food and the great presentation. We highly recommend you go and try it for yourself. It is a place of conviviality and it honestly deserves a try.
